Finally a simple interface for domain names.

happyDomain 0.6.0: security audit, interface overhaul, and what's next

A few days ago, Anthropic published the details of a collaboration with Mozilla in which Claude Opus 4.6 found 22 vulnerabilities in Firefox over two weeks, 14 of them rated high-severity by Mozilla, accounting for nearly a fifth of all high-severity Firefox fixes in 2025.
The result was striking enough that we wanted to try the same thing on happyDomain.

The scope we chose: authentication, session management, and the OIDC/OAuth2 flow.
Three areas where mistakes tend to be subtle, where the consequences of getting them wrong are serious, and where a fresh pair of eyes (even a synthetic one) can catch things that familiarity makes invisible.

What is DNS?

Understanding DNS: The Backbone of Our Digital World

In the vast expanse of the digital universe, where countless bytes of data traverse at the speed of light, there lies an unsung hero, pivotal yet often overlooked: the Domain Name System. Insiders call it DNS.

At its core, DNS is, for the internet, the equivalent of our good old phonebook. It elegantly translates human-friendly domain names into machine-readable IP addresses.

This translation is crucial; without it, we would be navigating the web not by typing familiar website names, but by remembering complex numerical strings. Imagine having to recall abstract strings of numbers every time you wanted to visit your favorite website!

Our conference at the Open Source Experience

The happyDomain team had the incredible opportunity to engage with the vibrant tech community at the Open Source Experience, held on December 7th, 2023, at the Palais des Congrès in Paris.

Our presence at this event was marked by insightful interactions, productive discussions, and the chance to share our vision with a diverse audience. On Thursday, December 7th, we hosted a conference that drew a curious and enthusiastic crowd. The session started at 2:45 pm in room 142, and we were thrilled to see the room buzzing with attendees eager to learn about our innovative approach to DNS and simplicity.

New DNS zone entry specifications with RFC 9460

The Domain Name System (DNS) has reached a milestone with the new RFC 9460 specifications published in early November 2023. Although subtle, these changes improve website optimization and security. One of the most notable changes is the addition of SVCB (Service Binding) and HTTPS record types.

What benefits do they bring?

These new registration types give domain owners greater flexibility and control:

  • Improved performance: service parameters can be set to optimize performance for your particular needs.
  • Enhanced security: HTTPS enables advanced security settings and strengthens user protection against online threats.
  • Extended compatibility: they are compatible with existing DNS implementations, facilitating adoption and integration.

Use cases and best practices

Adding these types of registration can be beneficial in several scenarios:

happyDomain : our 2 innovations that simplify domain ownership

At happyDomain, our aim is to simplify the use of domain names. It’s a daunting task, some would say, and it’s true that the 12 RFCs establishing how the protocol works don’t really go in that direction, but the stakes for each and every one of us are high.

So here, in a nutshell, are the two innovations we’ve developed to make domain ownership simple.

Domain abstraction

The key element of our interface is the abstraction that happyDomain creates on the fly: it groups services efficiently.
